McCain never tortured after all

In the newly minted journalistic tradition of simply taking a public official’s word for it, it seems that Senator John McCain (R-AZ) was never tortured after all during his years of captivity in Vietnam.  From a story in the UK’s Guardian:

In an interview with the Italian daily Corriere della Sera, Nguyen Tien Tran acknowledged that conditions in the prison were “tough, though not inhuman”. But, he added: “We never tortured McCain. On the contrary, we saved his life, curing him with extremely valuable medicines that at times were not available to our own wounded.”

So if we’re to follow the recent standards of the NY Times, LA Times, Washington Post, and USA Today, as revealed in the Harvard Kennedy School of Government study, then we are to believe that what Nguyen says is the undeniable truth, and that it was John McCain who greatly exaggerated the treatment he received while a prisoner in Vietnam.

Folks, it’s either one or the other. Either McCain was tortured, or he was not. Either waterboarding is torture or it isn’t.

Oh come on now… I’m sure if one were to ask Hermann Goerring, the SS were storing Jews at Auschwitz because they were worried the allied bombs would hit them. Or if you asked the Japanese, all those POWs who perished on the march to Bataan died because they fell down… and hit their head. (see “war wagon” with John Wayne, recurring theme)
McCain’s accounts have not been challenged to my knowledge by any of his fellow officers, and he’s got the physical scars to back most of it up. You have to do better than asking the enemy who have every reason to gloss over history.
It’s well known McCain was known to the NV to be the son of a prominent Naval Officer, and it’s well known he turned down their offer of an early release that they were trying to use as propaganda against the west. We also know he was kept at a facility known to have severely tortured POWs. It’s thus hard to imagine they didn’t torture him too.
I’d rather see you attack MmCain for something legit, like picking a dimwit VP running mate or the fact he’s not really Presidential material in the first place. Too gruff, all the charm of a crocodile. I mean, c’mon, aren’t there photos of the Vietnamese civilians prodding his broken boned body with pitchforks?
I remember someone ran a piece during the election criticizing him for leaving his plane after it was onfire as the great Forrestal disaster began. I think they were just upset he wasn’t killed in it.

John, did you even bother to read what I wrote, or just the title?

Come on man! Think before you type!
